How to Help Teenagers Own Their Faith…

Here's the question every parent asks me: “How do I make sure my teenager keeps their faith?” And here's my honest answer after twelve years of Friday nights: you can't make them. But you can give them a faith worth keeping — and a community worth keeping it in.
Researchers keep finding the same thing: teenagers who keep following Jesus into adulthood almost always had two things — parents whose faith was visible at home, and at least five adults in their church who knew their name. Programmes help. Relationships keep.
1. Let them see your faith, unpolished
Teenagers have flawless hypocrisy detectors. They don't need perfect parents; they need honest ones. Pray where they can hear you. Apologise when you get it wrong. Talk about what Sunday's sermon challenged in you — not just what they should learn from it.
“Don't outsource your teenager's faith to Friday nights. Amplify Friday nights with Monday mornings.”
2. Give them adults beyond you
This is what Youth Nights is for. Every teenager in our small groups has two consistent leaders who text them midweek, show up to their matches and plays, and pray for them by name. If your teen isn't in a group yet, Friday at 7:00 is the on-ramp — dinner's on us.
3. Let them ask anything
Science and Scripture, suffering and sexuality, doubt and deconstruction — if they can't ask it at church or at home, they'll ask it somewhere with worse answers. Our rule in small groups: no question is stupid, no doubt is shameful, and “I don't know, let's find out together” is always allowed.
And when they push back? Stay calm, stay close, keep praying. Most of our volunteers walked away for a season in their late teens — and were welcomed home by a church that had never stopped loving them. Your teenager's story isn't finished. Neither is yours.
